Peter David, PhD

Peter David, Ph.D. is the Chief Science Officer and a founder of BioDTX. He currently serves as a consultant to several venture capital firms and as an advisor to startups. Peter is an inventor of a number of scientific techniques and instruments. Before co-founding BioDTX, he was a researcher at Stanford University. He received a B.A. in chemistry and mathematics from Oberlin College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Harvard University. During postgraduate studies, Peter developed a novel program for computer directed drug design and then founded the team that solved the x-ray structure of yeast RNA polymerase II.

 

Jonathan Dugan, PhD

Jonathan Dugan, Ph.D., is founder and CEO of Matson Systems, a software startup building web-based collaboration tools.

Jonathan has worked as a consultant providing business strategy and technical implementation on the topic of building and maintaining community.

Previously, Jonathan worked in business development at SRI International in Menlo Park. He is a co-founder and director of BioE2E, a non-profit group focused on building and supporting a community of entrepreneurs in life sciences. He is an advisor for the Stanford/MIT venture lab and a member of the board of directors for the Life Sciences Society.

Jonathan completed his Ph.D. at Stanford University in 2002 in computer science and medicine.

 

Shauna Farr-Jones, PhD

Shauna Farr-Jones currently consults for biotechnology companies doing technology assessment, competitive intelligence, grant proposal writing and market research. She also helps academics and non-profits to prepare complex multi-investigator grant and contract proposals. She was recently at BioCentury Publications, the leading biotechnology business newsletter, where she analyzed and wrote about strategic market and technology issues affecting biotechnology companies. Her scientific interests include drug discovery technologies, structural biology and bioinformatics. Shauna's education includes a post-doctoral fellowship at UCSF, Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Tufts University in Boston, and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Southampton University, UK.

 

Carolyn R. Kahn, PhD

Carrie Kahn, PhD, is the Founder and CEO of Sensorin, an emerging company that has developed a novel platform technology. Its’ first product will provide calibration free pH sensing capability to the biologics manufacturing industry. Prior to this venture Carrie served as President and CEO of Hepaticus, which was developing an animal model for ADMET and HCV drug development. This venture emerged from the BioSeed Fund that Carrie founded while serving as an early stage venture investor with Connecticut Innovations (CI). While at CI she invested and served on the board of a number of early stage companies, and also helped create and manage a $60 million BioTech Facilities Fund to provide facility improvements to portfolio companies. Following years of academic research, and prior to becoming involved in entrepreneurial activities, she developed an in vitro model of the human cornea to avoid animal based ocular safety testing while working for the Gillette Medical Evaluation Labs at the Gillette Corporation. Carrie received her degrees from the Johns Hopkins University (AB) and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (PhD).

 

Constance McKee, MBA
Constance McKee is founder and CEO of Asilomar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Asilomar is developing drugs to improve treatment of the peripheral nervous system. She was previously Chief Executive of Cambridge Quantum Fund, a seed fund at Cambridge University, and was a founder of one of CQF's portfolio companies.

In addition to founding Asilomar, since returning to the US in 1995 she has invested in or advised 15 early-stage companies in life sciences and technology. Constance has an undergraduate degree in liberal arts from Stanford and an MBA from Yale University. She has been a member of Licensing Executives Society since 1990.

 

Lesley Pickford, PhD

Lesley Pickford is a consultant in biotechnology R&D, advising small and startup companies on strategies for defining their preclinical programs, product profiles and target markets. Lesley has over 12 years industry experience in the Bay Area in bio-pharmaceutical and diagnostics development, predominantly in the disease areas of oncology, autoimmune diseases and metabolic disorders. Until mid-2003, Lesley was VP of Research at Calyx Therapeutics and previously she held Director of Pharmacology and/or Toxicology positions at the biopharmaceutical companies Corixa, Coulter Pharmaceutical and Connetics. Lesley has lead and participated on many project teams, including collaborative joint ventures with international pharmaceutical companies. She has been extensively involved in Business Development activities including M&A, licensing of drugs and spin-outs of research programs.

Lesley received a PhD in Medical Biochemistry from Flinders University of South Australia, and a Bachelors of Science degree from Adelaide University, in South Australia. She held Post-Doctoral Fellowships at Stanford University in the Departments of Pathology and Psychiatry for 6 years, working on neuro-immunology and ageing projects.

 

Rivka Sherman-Gold, PhD, MBA
Rivka Sherman-Gold, Ph.D., MBA is a seed/early-stage life-science industry investor-entrepreneur. Rivka's over 20 years of experience in the biotech/life-science industry include R&D, business strategy and business development, financing strategy, raising capital, executive-level management, and serving on board of directors and advisory boards. Her industry-segment experience includes therapeutics (small molecules and biologics), diagnostics, instrumentations, and medical devices.

Rivka was Chief Business Officer of Diatos SA, a Paris-based biotechnology company, where she spearheaded the companys evolution into a product-development company by in-licensing two clinical-stage anti-cancer therapeutics. Prior to Diatos, Rivka was President and CEO of Alydar Pharmaceuticals, a seed-stage company developing small-molecule therapeutics for treating cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Previously, serving as Director of Business Development at Abgenix, Rivka played a key role in the growth and success of the company by initiating, negotiating, and managing multiple licensing partnerships with major pharmaceutical and biotech companies (Pfizer, Amgen, Schering-Plough, SmithKline Beecham, Centocor, J&J, Elan, Millennium, and others). Prior to Abgenix, Rivka was Associate Director of Business Development at Athena Neurosciences, where she initiated and spearheaded the creation of a strategic alliance between Athena and Elan.

Dr. Sherman-Gold holds a B.Sc. in chemistry and M.Sc. in biophysics and physiology, both from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Ph.D. in life-science from The Weizmann Institute of Science, and M.B.A. from California State University, San Jose (SJSU). She was a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine.

 

Karen Wong, Ph.D., J.D.

Dr. Karen Wong is an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. Dr. Wong assists private and public companies in creating and implementing strategies to capitalize on their new technologies. Her practice areas include patent prosecution, portfolio planning, technology transfer or licensing.

Prior to joining Wilson Sonsini, Dr. Wong was an associate at Howrey Simon Arnold & White, LLP, where she engaged in both patent prosecution and litigation. Her experience in both practice areas has allowed her to effectively assist clients in establishing and enforcing valuable intellectual property rights. Before joining Howrey, Dr. Wong was a patent agent in the biotech patent practice group at Morrison & Foerster, LLP.

Dr. Wong has worked with a broad range of technologies, including therapeutic delivery, clinical diagnostics, immunotherapies, bioinformatics, gene therapy, and cancer biology. She has special technical expertise in antibody engineering and production, drug screening and delivery, cell signaling and differentiation.

Prior to practicing law, Dr. Wong conducted doctoral and post-doctoral research at Harvard and Tufts Medical School in a multidisciplinary area combining molecular biology, cell biology, and physiology. She received her B.A. in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Dr. Wong also holds a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law.

 

Stuart Wren
Stuart Wren is the principal of Wren International, a consulting company providing advice to pharmaceutical companies on corporate development strategy and the formation and management of alliances, particularly between US and Japanese companies.

Stuart trained as a microbiologist and worked on microbial process development for Shell Research Ltd. Subsequently, Stuart moved into the world of intellectual property and licensing by working for a UK government organisation, now known as the British Technology Group.

Stuart’s commercial and business development expertise were developed while working for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and its heritage companies for over 20 years. For 10 years Stuart lived in Japan, where he served on the board GlaxoWellcome as Director of Business Development and Legal Affairs.

With the formation of GSK, Stuart was appointed to a new business development position within International Operations Region, based in the UK. Stuart’s focus was on markets in the Asian Pacific Region where he led numerous projects in China, India and Korea, in addition to Japan.
