With biotechnology poised to be the next HUGE thing – are you ready?

BioE2E (Biotech Entrepreneur-to-Entrepreneur) is the largest and most active network of biotech entrepreneurs in the Bay Area. For over 5 years, we've addressed the "must know" issues facing today’s life science entrepreneurs.

BioE2E’s mission is to coalesce an active community of life science entrepreneurs by creating a lively forum for the exchange of applicable real-world entrepreneurial experiences.

BioE2E is open to everyone. While the series is designed to facilitate those actively trying to start, build and/or operate a life science-related business, anyone interested in or involved with entrepreneurial endeavors in the life science arena will benefit by attending.

The cost of genetic testing has rapidly diminished, while our
understanding of the clinical impact of genetic differences has grown
exponentially. However, many questions remain:
• How can a company make a viable business in this space?
• What are the optimal ways to address genetic testing in
advance of defined clinical solutions?
• What is the value proposition for genetic testing?
• Will genetic testing drive clinical trial design?
• What stance has the FDA taken? Will it change?
• How can genetic testing be incorporated into our
dysfunctional healthcare system?
• Will genetic testing be reimbursed by insurance and Medicare
or will genetic testing remain a vanity for the rich?

Join BioE2E on November 5th to hear companies (Navigenics, 23andMe
and Pacific Biosciences) present their business strategies and
perspectives on genetic testing technology.

Speakers:

Stephen Moore, General Counsel, Navigenics
Mr. Moore was most recently associate general counsel with Affymetrix, Inc., a publicly traded biotechnology company developing advanced technologies for genetic screening. During his more than eight years at Affymetrix, he was responsible for a wide variety of strategic alliances, collaboration agreements and other transactional matters, including the spin-out of Perlegen Sciences, research collaborations with leading academic institutions such as the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, diagnostic product supply agreements and Affymetrix's Translational Medicine program in the United States and Canada.

Hugh Martin, Chairman and CEO, Pacific Bioscience
Mr. Martin joined Pacific Biosciences in 2004 as a seasoned executive with a 25-year track record managing leading edge technologies, new ventures, and high growth businesses. Named the Fastest Growing Company in Silicon Valley in 2001, ONI was sold to Ciena in 2002. After its sale, Mr. Martin served as a consultant to Ciena, a CEO in residence at the venture capital firm of Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and was a Director at Cloudshield Technologies. Prior to ONI, Mr. Martin was President and Director of 3DO—an interactive gaming company. His earlier experience includes running desktop engineering for Apple Computer and founding Ridge Computers—designer of the world's first commercial reduced instruction set computing (RISC) minicomputer. Mr. Martin received a BS in Electrical Engineering at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Mr. Martin currently serves on the Board of Directors of Pacific Biosciences and Infinera.

Before joining the firm, Vern was the general counsel and corporate secretary of Perlegen Sciences, Inc., a start-up biotechnology company that scans the entire human genome for important therapeutic and diagnostic products. Previously, as senior vice president and general counsel, he was an early employee of Affymetrix, the biotechnology company that pioneered and developed DNA chip technology. He also had been a partner at Townsend and Townsend and Crew in Palo Alto.  During his career, Vern has authored or prosecuted more than 15 patents that have been litigated in the United States and abroad, and has overseen intellectual property lawsuits throughout the world.
